Rocking & Patting to Self-Settling

When I first connected with Maria, she was struggling to get her 10-month-old daughter Jade to fall asleep without being rocked or patted to sleep. As she was returning to work soon and her mum would be looking after Jade, Maria wanted Jade to fall asleep without needing rocking. During our conversation, she mentioned that she had resorted to taking Jade's cot mattress out of the cot and putting it on the floor to make it easier for everyone to get back to sleep.

We discussed various settling techniques, particularly gentle ones, as they'd tried controlled crying in the past, but it was too much for Maira and Jade to manage. So instead, we opted for a gentler hands-on technique whilst working towards teaching Jade to self-settle.

Maria followed Jade's plan rigidly and consistently for 9 days, during which she made amazing progress. Jade had developed to self-settle but still needed some reassurance. During the day, her routine was slightly altered to suit when needed to support nighttime sleep and sleeping through the night.

By the time our 14 days of support ended, Jade was no longer needing Maria in the room the whole time when Jade was falling asleep. Rather, Maira was able to do checks every so often (by choice), giving Jade a bit of reassurance when she fussed.
